CFU Recipes:

ACNE: If your acne is hormone related, primrose and wheat germ taken internally will help balance hormone production. Vitamin E mixed with the herbs lily and comfrey can be applied to heal scarring after inflammation is gone. Clean your skin with milk and yogurt. Taking bee propolis internally and externally. Acne sufferers often need additional chromium, selenium, magnesium, and zinc. Many people swear by lecithin, taking two tablespoons of the granules in apple juice or five capsules per day. It is said to emulsify and help break down fatty globules in the body. Mega GLA has helped some people to reduce inflammation and help calm overactive glands. Applying diluted lemon juice, which is antiseptic, cleansing, and has a high pH. See Lily's Book, Beauty, Health & Happiness page 237-250 for other beneficial acne treatments. DARK CIRCLES: To treat puffy or dark circles under the eyes, try a potato compress. You can cut the potato and apply or grate the potato and put in gauze; leave on for one-half hour while lying down, relaxing and thinking positive thoughts. You can use a cucumber in place of potato.

ECZEMA: Eczema appears as elevated, very parched, crusty, usually discolored patches on the skin. It is a puzzling skin ailment, caused by stress, diet, allergies, or from using highly chemicalized body care products, including dish detergents. Cut down on all non-vegetable proteins, sugars, oils, white flours products, and dairy products. Apply aloe vera and take evening primrose capsules and also apply topically. Use only fresh body-care products free of any synthetic chemicals. Try homeopathic remedies available at your health food store.

CELLULITE: Apply essential oils of cypress and sage and massage into skin (dilute with almond oil or sunflower oil) Put your feet up above your waist as often as you can daily. Take lecithin tablets to help cleanse the fatty deposits. Deep breathing helps purify the blood and rid the system of toxins. It's also an excellent way to help burn up cellulite and help move waste out of the connective tissue. Regular exercise helps create muscle tone and firm tissue. Lily has more tips for dealing with cellulite on pages 252-253 of her book, Beauty, Health and Happiness.

DRY SKIN: Traditional tries-and-true remedies to help combat dryness of the skin include taking herbal teas with reputations for improving the blood, such as sarsaparilla, burdock, yellow dock, and nettle. Also eat lots of nuts and high quality vegetable oils. Cleanse the skin with a non-drying cleanser (such as Lily Facial Cleanser) ensuring that all debris of dead skin is removed. Use a moisturizer, such as a cream or lotion. After the cream soaks in, apply a nut or vegetable oil with a tissue and pat off the excess; allow the rest to soak in. Take evening primrose oil and apply topically. Use a bag of oatmeal as a wash cloth. Pages 221-226 of Lily's book, Beauty, Health & Happiness is full of suggestions for dealing with and improving your dry skin.

SUNSCREEN: Light is a nutrient. The energy of plants and all life depends on the absorption of sunlight. Be careful that the sunscreens you are applying to your skin are not more harmful than the rays of the sun. Instead of using a commercial sunscreen which may contain chemicals that can be toxic, try avoiding sun exposure between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm when the UVB rays are the strongest. If needed, use natural plant oil sunscreens such as sesame and avocado oil, and herbs such as yarrow, lily and rosemary. See page 94 of Beauty, Health & Happiness for Lily's recipe for a homemade sunscreen.

SUNBURN: Take a cool bath with one-quarter cup of baking soda or apply it with a compress. Apply aloe vera. Make a compress of skim milk and oatmeal and apply. Apply witch hazel with a cotton ball. Apply diluted essential oil of lavender. Put your moisturizer in the refrigerator before applying. Drink lots of water to counteract the drying effects.

SKIN DISCOLORATIONS: Brown spots on the skin, also called age spots or liver spots, may be due to vitamin deficiencies in the diet. Others say it is just a part of aging. Some effective folk remedies include; apply cooked oatmeal. Apply fresh lemon juice for bleaching. Grate fresh horseradish in yogurt and apply. Mix onion juice with vinegar and rub on the age spot. Apply feverfew topically in oil or water. Take wheat germ and also apply topically. Apply raw potato. Check Lily's book, Beauty, Health & Happiness, page 260 for many more remedies.

OILY SKIN: Eliminating animal fats and fried foods can help many with oily skin. After every cleansing, use a toner with lavender, sage or vinegar, or make your own (or try our wonderful Lily Herbal Astringent). Oily skin can benefit greatly by applying a grated raw potato as a mask or just rubbing the potato on the skin and leaving the juices on for one-half hour, rinsing off with water and vinegar. You might find taking the B vitamins (especially B6), whole grains, beets, oranges, and lemons very helpful.

PUFFY EYES: To improve facial puffiness due to water retention, you need to take care of your overall health, especially the process that helps cleanse your body: the kidney filtration system. Eliminate or cut down on coffee, carbonated drinks, alcohol, and cut out diet soda because it's high in sodium. Replace these beverages with pure water. Include herbs, such as parsley to help get rid of excess fluids. Celery and lemon juice cleanse impurities from the bloodstream. Peach juice promotes urination which helps eliminate stored waste. Adding herbal teas to your diet can also help purge your body of excess fluids. Place an ice pack over your eyes for five to ten minutes. Use eye masks high in tannic acid; apply wet, black tea bags to closed eyes.

VARICOSE VEINS:
Alternately apply hot and cold compresses and leave each on for at least fifteen minutes. Standing and sitting in one place can pool the blood. Move around, change positions, go for a walk. Avoid "negative" fluids, e .g. pop, caffeine, alcohol. Cut down on animal foods. Use lotions that contain chamomile, Oregon grape, or red clover. Apply essential oil of juniper diluted with almond oil.

ROSACEA: One of Lily Organics customers, Judy, developed her personal "Skin Care System" to treat her rosacea. She says her rosacea has improved dramatically and highly recommends her "System" which consists of: 1) Use Lily's Cleanser and Astringent twice a day 2) Use Lily's Mask about 3 times a week 3) Use the Lily Lavender Moisturizing Cream daily. We also recommend that you change your make-up. Find a good quality make-up specifically made for "sensitive skin". Be sure to check the ingredients.

WRINKLES: Follow a good, clean skin-care regimen. Moisturizers lubricate the skin and reduce the stress of the skin when facial expressions are made. Moisturizers also have to ability to puff up the skin somewhat, making the skin look less lined. Sleeping face up really helps, so that the skin doesn't get so distorted. Use a blend of any of the following essential oils diluted on almond oil: lavender, neroli, rose, frankincense, patchouli, rosemary, sandalwood, cypress, fennel or myrrh. Accept and love yourself and the fact that God has allowed you to continue life on the planet.

SMOKERS: It's a fact that smokers have more wrinkles than non-smokers, because smoking slows the circulation of the blood to the skin. Watch your facial mannerisms. While smile lines are attractive, frown lines are not. I get a lot of questions about lines on the forehead. Serious worriers have much deeper lines on their foreheads; if you don't know what facial expressions you engage in, put a mirror on your desk at work and watch yourself in the mirror when you talk on the phone. If you interested in quitting smoking, check out Lily's book, Beauty, Health & Happiness, page 69 for tips on how Lily herself quit smoking.

RECIPES:

WONDERFUL CLEANSER: I think the best cleansers are made from almond oil soap, lily, vegetable glycerin, and essential oils of lavender, rosemary, sage, and lemon juice. A good cleanser should go on easily and be a pleasure to wash with. They work best if followed by a fine scented, refreshing toner or astringent.

A make-it-yourself cleanser: Baking soda used as a gentle cleanser helps detoxify the skin from the outside by removing the grit, grime and pollution. A simple cleansing formula is:

2 tablespoons baking soda
1 teaspoon almond oil
2 drops lavender essential oil
1 cup water
1 tablespoon honey.

On low heat, combing all ingredients except honey. Remove from heat and let cool. Add honey. It will separate, so stir before using. Apply to the skin like a soap and rinse off with tepid water.

Cleansing creams and lotions that are made with beneficial herbs and oils are great for dry skin. They remove dirt and debris on the skin but don't dehydrate or strip the skin of too much oil. Scrubbing grains were popular a few years back before the enzyme masks became the rage. They do a good job of removing debris from the top layer of skin. Many people, however, don't like their abrasive quality.

VINEGAR'S ROLE IN SKIN CARE: Apple cider vinegar is helpful to both dry and oily skin. It acts to refine the skin pores, and reestablishes a natural acid balance while softening the skin.

If your skin has a reaction to soap, such as itching, you may want to stop using soap and use the apple cider vinegar instead, particular in the bath. Vinegar is a natural deodorizer and acid balance restorer. Just add one cup of vinegar to your bath water and let it soak into the pores for at least twenty minutes.

If you have a itchy scalp, try dipping your hairbrush in a glass of water with one teaspoon of vinegar enough times to get your hair wet. This will not only reduce the itching but will make your hair soft and easy to manage. One caution vinegar may straighten perms.

VINEGAR FOR BLEMISHES: Vinegar helps soften skin and restore the skin's natural acid mantle. It is a great rinse for blemished skin. Steam the face with lavender to cleanse the skin. Bring a pan of water to a boil, put a small handful of lavender flowers in the water, and remove the heat. Hold your head over the pan and drape a towel over your head to allow the lavender-enhanced steam to loosen the grease and dirt. Then take a cotton ball drenched in vinegar and lightly pat on the skin. Repeat this twice. Then pat on vinegar that has been chilled in the refrigerator, to close the pores and close the skin.

For tired muscles and joints, take a vinegar bath. Soak in warm water to which one and one-half cups of vinegar have been added.

MAKING A COSMETIC VINEGAR: Add one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar to one cup of rose water. This can be used to tone oily skin, as well as after shampooing to restore the hair's natural balance.

Rose Vinegar:

One cup vinegar
One tablespoon fresh dried rose flowers
One cup purified water

Heat the rose flowers with the vinegar and water. Bring to a boil and steep for 30 minutes. After cooling , place mixture in a jar with a tight fitting lid and let sit for 2 weeks. Strain the rose flowers from the vinegar and use the liquid for bath, hair rinse or facial soak.

For vinegar facial soak, heat the rose vinegar slowly until it is a comfortable temperature to apply to the skin. Soak a clean warm wash cloth in vinegar and lay over the face for five minutes, each time redipping the washcloth to reapply. For best results, keep the washcloth on the skin for a total of 20 minutes. This is an excellent exfoliant and skin stimulant.

VINEGAR ELIXERS: I make several different, perfectly wonderful vinegar elixirs, which I drink daily. In one of them, I soak garlic, horseradish and onion in vinegar for a month and then add about 20% of a tincture of elethro ginsing, dong quai and vitex. This is a consummate health drink for women. I have not been sick in the last two years since I began taking it daily, not even with a cold. It gives me strength and energy to keep up and stay on target with my ever so-many activities. I highly recommend this formula for everyone. Men can just do the vinegar mixture without the herbs.

VERSITILE VINEGAR: Vinegar must be one of the most useful things on Earth for humankind. Just to name a few things, vinegar is used to clean windows, disinfect, in the laundry to brighten colors, on the carpet to absorb odors and remove stains, polish furniture, remove ink stains, make an air freshener, remove perspiration stains, absorb cat box odors and clean the entire household for "pennies on the dollar" without any harm to the environment.

As a medicine, it kills infection, soothes coughs, eases the pain of a sore throat, and calms nausea. Taken with honey before bed, it instills sleep.

DID YOU KNOW?: Our oils make an excellent hot oil hair treatment! Heat oil carefully. Place a small amount in a container inside a bowl of hot water. When it has reached a sufficient temperature, apply to hair and scalp. Leave on for 30 minutes or longer, then shampoo.

EUCALYPTUS: Throw a handful of the eucalyptus leaves into your bath or use in a facial steam. One teaspoon of the oil in one cup of water rubbed on the skin makes a perfect insect repellent for animals or humans.

VINEGAR PEEL – For all skin types, except sensitive, vinegar is very acidic and can disturb sensitive skin. The vinegar removes dead cells so it is perfect for dry flaky skin or oily skin. Mix ¼ to ½ Cup certified organic (with the Mother in it, the floating sediment is imperative to quality vinegar) to one Cup pure water. Take a washcloth and cut out the eyes and nose to see and breath. Soak the washcloth in the water/vinegar mix and apply to your face while lying down. Leave on for up to 25 minutes.

FACIAL SALT SCRUB - The salt scrub can be used for all skin types. Instead of an enzyme or acidic action to remove dead cells, the salt scrub uses a mechanical action. The salt scrub is the easiest and best way to have a scrub available at all times. All you have to do is simply add salt to your cleanser or soap. It is very important you do not add salt to the product in the bottle or jar. You must only add it at the time of cleansing or you will change the chemical constituency of the product!! You can also do the exact same thing with sugar.

BODY SALT SCRUB – This can be used for all skin types periodically as needed to remove dead skin. Put 2/3 Cup olive or almond oil in a small bowl. Add approximately the same amount of sea salt or table salt (if that is all you have on hand) or sugar. Add enough to make a nice consistency to be able to grab and rub all over your body. Add several drops of your favorite essential oil and begin rubbing all over your body in the tub – seated. Be very careful in the bathtub because the oil can cause you to slip and fall. Rub the salt all over your body to remove dead cells. When you are done, shower off. Your whole body will feel fabulous!

PAPAYA EXFOLIANT MASK – Simply take one papaya and put in the blender. Apply to dry face and leave on for 20 plus minutes. You may also add ground herbs, other fruits or vegetables, including cucumber.

HONEY LAVENDER ROSE MASK – Ground up into a powder, one (1) ounce each of lavender and of rose. Mix into it the right consistency of honey to make a paste that will be easily applied to the skin.

CHAMOMILE TONER, CHAMOMILE BATH RELAXANT, CHAMOMILE TEA, CHAMOMILE EYE TONING PADS, AND CHAMOMILE HAIR RINSE – This is the one herb that meets all needs! Simply make a tea with pre-packaged tea bags or with approximately one (1) ounce herb to every one (1) cup of water to make a very strong tea. Bring water to a boil, add herb, steep for 20 minutes, strain. You may use this very same tea to apply as a facial toner, to put one cup in your bath, to drink to relax, soak cotton balls in the tea and freeze or put in the refrigerator for a beautiful anti-inflammatory cooling effect. Blondes particularly benefit from using this tea as a leave-in hair rinse.
